The Typ 4 was the first all-new Volkswagen since the VW Typ 1 "Beetle/Käfer" (The Typ 3 was still based on the Typ 1).
And it was the first Volkswagen with a unitary body. The Typ 4 was not as successful as Volkswagen wanted it to be.
