Steyr was founded in 1864 as "Josef und Franz Werndl & Comp., Waffenfabrik und Sägemühle" and from 1869 as
"Oesterreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft (OEWG)". From 1918 it produced cars, and in 1926 the company was renamed to
"Steyr-Werke AG". In 1934 it merged with the "Austro-Daimler-Puchwerke A.G" to the "Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG".
In 1998 the automobile manufacturing division was sold to the "Magna Europe AG", since then it is called "MAGNA STEYR AG & Co KG".

The Steyr 220 succeeded the Steyr 120 with the engine from the Steyr 530.
