Heinz Melkus was driving teacher, designer and one of the most successful
racedriver of the former German Democratic Republic. He designed and built small race cars
from 1959. In 1969 the production of the Melkus RS1000 started, the only sports car
ever built in the former German Democratic Republic.
In 2008 the production of this sports car restarted, with old tools and old parts and a new
1.6l engine several Melkus RS1600 were built. The production of a all-new sports car, the
RS2000, has just begun.
