Matra (Mécanique Avion TRAction) was founded in 1942 as a company for aeroplanes.
In the early 1960s the production of cars started, this lasted until 1986, when the last
car with the name "Matra" was produced. From 1979 the cars were renamed to Talbot Matra.
The company produced cars until 2003. At the end Matra built cars for Renault.
In 2004 the Italian car design company Pininfarina bought Matra.

The Matra Murena was the replacement for the Matra Bagheera.
