The Lotus Elan was developed in the 1980's together with the new Lotus owner GM. But when launched in 1989,
the Elan had to fight much cheaper competitors like the Mazda MX5/Miata. Therefore it sold badly and the production ceased in 1992.
A few years later, in 1996, Lotus sold the production facilities to Kia, and the licensed production restarted in 1998 for two years.
