In 1916 the Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. planned
to build automobiles. Two years later, the first car went into production, in cooperation with Wolseley. In 1949 the company was renamed
to "Isuzu" (= "fifty bells"). Since the 1970's Isuzu works together with GM, which hold 49% of the Isuzu stocks for a while.
Today, Isuzu mainly builds commercial vehicles.
