This was the second generation of the BMW 5-series. It was developed from the E12. The E28-body was
very similar to the E12, with improvements and updates in points the E12 was criticized for.
The technics, suspension and the drivetrain were improved, too.
Alpina installed the 3.5litre-inline-6-engine in the BMW E28 5-series years before BMW did it.
The engine was tuned by Alpina, too.
