The regulation for the Grand-Prix series were changed for the Season 1939. The dispalcement was limited to 3liter/183ci.
That was the reason, Auto Union developed the Typ D, the successor to the Typ C. But the regulation changes did not affect the
hill climb races, hence Auto Union developed the Typ C/D, based on the chassis of the new Typ D with the more powerful
